About this site

Prior to this project. the area was bare of trees, although some small shrubs remained. High rainfall led to flash flooding in the area, destroying roads and bridges and there was extensive erosion. Large amounts of topsoil had been lost, reducing potential productivity in higher areas and leaving large silt and rock deposits on farms in lower areas. Since June 2006, the project site has been managed using Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), to select, prune and manage existing roots, stumps and wildlings to grow into trees. The communities have contributed strongly to to the project undertaking the FMNR, and establishing and planting over 1,320,000 seedlings to supplement the natural regeneration. Responsible for the management and protection of the regenerated forest are seven village-level cooperatives. World Vision staff provide technical training with cooperative members. Much effort has also been invested in community consultation, education and awareness building around the concept of carbon trading and supporting the ongoing monitoring and verification requirements.
