The registered NGO Fernciffe forest wilding is devoted to the restoration and rewilding of degraded eastern mistbelt forest patches and riverine corridors in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The forest habitat type at Ferncliffe is endangered, and is severely affected by invasive plant species, both woody IAPs, creepers, and understorey plants. Recruitment is not happening to any great extent and even mature indigenous trees are being pulled down or swamped. The pilot site highlighted here incorporates a number of different areas: some more intact riverine forest, an area covered in invasive running bamboo, and some wetland areas clogged with Mauritius Thorn and other invasives. We clear or thin these areas before planting over 30 species of indigenous forest tree species. We also construct tree guards to protect them from browsers. Our satellite imagery will show some disturbance to the canopy cover as we have to replace the invasives.
