Extreme weather events and natural hazards are on the rise. Hurricanes are growing stronger and intensifying more rapidly than ever before. Wildfire activity has more than doubled in the last two decades, with fires burning hotter, longer, and across larger areas. Floods, droughts and heatwaves are similarly increasing in frequency and severity. These events post significant challenges to the wellbeing of human communities and the natural world. They cause acute damages, create short-term and long-term public health risks, disrupt the integrity of ecosystems and drive species extirpations and extinctions. To prepare for and build resilience towards these growing challenges, National Geographic Society is seeking to fund impactful projects driving science-based solutions to the threats of extreme weather events and natural hazards such as wildfires, hurricanes, tornados, droughts, floods, heatwaves and severe storms.
