In 2006, in the south-west of Ethiopia, local communities developed a Forest Restoration Plan together with World Vision.
The restoration plan was a response to the heavy degradation of forests on Mount Damota.
The plan aims to reforest the slopes, restore the ecosystem, and conserve biodiversity using an approach known as Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR).
The five communities living around Mount Damota are custodians of the plan.
So far, more than 48,000 trees have regenerated and regrown from existing stumps and rootstocks. Biodiversity is returning to the area and near-threatened species such as the Abyssinian Longclaw and Bateluer can be found here.
